Understanding Copyright, Fair Use, & Legal Compliance

This topic is Individual Copyright, Fair Use, and Legal Compliance. Individual Copyright is a big issue for many individuals in our society today. Copyright is basically a legal device that protects the authors (creator of the original works) rights. They are allowed the right to control how their work is used. I researched famous copyright infringement cases and found some pretty interesting things. Today many people are required to let the managers view their Facebook profile and/or obtain the passwords of their Facebook before getting the job. This has upset many applicants. Creative Commons is going to prove very useful in understanding Copyright and Fair Use. I researched fair use and found that it is a legal exception to the charge of infringement. It allows the use of copyrighted material without permission for purposes of education, commentary, critique, parody, and news reporting.

Musicians and songwriters must protect their work, they must copyright it to do so. The copyright laws are designed to ensure the creator or artist to get credit for his or her work. Most of the time the creator owns the copyright. However if an employee creates/contributes some of the work he or she also holds the copyright. When a copyright is given it can take 67-120 years before the copyright is allowed to be used by others, depending on when the copyright was given.

Legal Compliance

There are litanies of local, state and federal regulations governing how a company operates. These laws vary by the number of employees a company has from 1 to 1,000 or more. To maintain legal compliance and avoid penalties, companies need to be aware of what the regulations are and how they impact the organization.
